Things don't always happen as we intend. But they happen nonetheless. Freelance Fresh, the intended debut vinyl instrumental album of Pomona California's enigmatic, resourceful, and deeply thoughtful vocalist/producer Phantom Thrett, contains the sounds of funky and jazzy futuristic soul sampled and sealed in the space of a little over a half an hour. Recorded entirely on the Roland MV-8000, a gift presented to Thrett in childhood from his mother who realized the dream of her son to create sonic masterpieces, this record is nothing short of vintage interpretations of classic records. The wise artist reveals in this beautifully dense analog audio excursion his knowledge of the songs and genres that underlie even the very possibility of electronic music itself. This album is an indulgence into our dangerously creative past, where to strum a trumpet or saxophone with human wind and make coveted images appear to the imagination of the devout was a sacred skill. The mechanical reworking of jazz, soul, funk, and Caribbean vibes presented in this short anthology do nothing but highlight the greatness of the creations in their original residence while simultaneously showing the genius of their curator as he re-presents them in the present with chops, sequences and additions that set him amongst the greatest in this modern instrumental electronic culture full of foolish peddlers of audio art. Whether you're engaging the impenetrable aesthetic atmosphere evoked by the wavs of "Chemtrails" or staring at the sky as the notes of "Sunflower Sunset" awaken vacant places you forgot played in your being/becoming, Freelance Fresh is sure to permeate your senses as its intelligent compositions reenchant your universe until you see suns as Egyptian gold beaming through trees of amethysts, washing the earth upon which you rest in deep purple mysteries.
